Discover Woolwich...

A thriving and culturally vibrant district that combines its proud heritage with modern regeneration, making it an exciting place for your business to grow.

Woolwich - The Heritage

Woolwich was historically the site of the Royal Arsenal and was a major industrial centre. The Royal Arsenal can trace its roots as a military hub back to 1512 when Henry VIII established a royal dockyard and munitions factory to construct his flagship, the Henry Grace à Dieu.

History in numbers:

  • For 200 years, the factories and laboratories that manufactured cannons and munitions for the armed forces were based in Woolwich.

  • At its peak, the Royal Arsenal covered 1,300 acres and employed c.100,000 people.

  • Due to its strategic importance, it was typically omitted from maps and labelled the ‘Secret City’.

Woolwich - The Opportunity

Woolwich has recently been the site of a major regeneration effort. Berkeley Homes has conscientiously redeveloped the Royal Arsenal and several other institutional investors are developing significant projects around Woolwich.

Woolwich in numbers:

  • Population of 162,100 people across 64,650 households.

  • Local working population of 51,600.

  • £398 million annual consumer goods spend.

  • Further 10,000 homes consented or are in planning.
